SEDIMENT AND EROSION CONTROL
Sediment and erosion is a major cause of stormwater pollution. Erosion is the removal of soil from a site by wind (dust) or water (runoff/rain). This soil, mud, sand and silt (sediment) then deposits into drains, creeks and rivers and can cause blockages, choke water flow, destroy habitats and can cause further significant environmental problems.
The objectives of sediment control are to minimise erosion caused by site disturbance, to divert uncontaminated water away from the site and to prevent sediment contaminated water leaving the site.
The Sustainable Planning Act 2009 includes development conditions that require sediment and erosion control measures to be installed and maintained on development and construction sites. Council Officers regularly and randomly inspect development sites and in accordance with the provisions of the Protection of the Environment (Operations) Act 1997, can issue warnings, penalty infringement notices and even on the spot fines for non-compliance or lack of adequate sediment and erosion control measures.
